Description

This poster commemorates the end of WWII, with all of the battles in which American forces were involved are listed in order, starting with the attack on Pearl Harbor and ending with the dropping of the atomic bombs.

At the the bottom, this quote, from FDR’s address to Congress and the nation following the attack on Pearl Harbor:

“We will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.”

May 8, 1945 marks V-E Day, Victory in Europe, when the “cease fire” took effective on 11:01 pm Central European Time. The first signing of surrender occurred on May 7, 1945 in Rheims, France; a second surrender ceremony took place on May 8, 1945 in Berlin. Because of the time difference, Russia and other Eastern Countries mark V-E Day on May 9th.

September 2, 1945 marks V-J Day, Victory in Japan, when Japan signed the surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
