Description
Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, was in office from 1869 to 1877. He was known for his strong character and dignity. Before becoming president, he spent four years commanding Union forces in the Civil War, eventually becoming supreme commander of all Union forces. His strategy of going after the principle Southern armies helped to end the war in 1865.
